SXSW Review: In Our Nature

Running Time:103 Minutes

Meeting the parents is always
difficult. Director Brian Salveson's In
Our Nature shows its audience just how difficult it can truly be.

The film follows
Seth (Zach Gilford) and Andie (Jenna Malone) on a romantic weekend getaway to
Seth's father's cabin in upstate New York.  His father and girlfriend unexpectedly interrupt the trip,
opting to visit the cabin as well.
In Our Nature is a relatable
tale of how a relationship between a father and son is affecting happiness in
romantic courtships.  The two
couples decide to coexist for the weekend, trying like mad to relax around
those that make them the most anxious.

This
movie is very pretty but moves painfully slow in areas.  The performances were astounding,
especially from Gabrielle Union, who surprised me with her dramatic chops.  John Slattery doesn't stray much from
his role as Roger in AMC's Mad Men,
maintaining the same dismissive, borderline chauvinistic attitude towards
everyone around him, though this performance has a bit more humanity. Newcomer
Zach Gilford held his own with veteran Jenna Malone"”both actors begged the
audience look inward to fix the same problems facing our characters.

Our inability to
communicate and learn from our mistakes was put on full display by director
Brian Salveson. I would not suggest this for date night"”unless your date is a
bottle of red wine.
