Sundance Review: Here

Score:B-

Director:Braden King

Cast:Ben Foster, Lubna Azabal, Narek Nersisyan, Yuri Kostanyan

Running Time:120 Minutes

Rated:NR

While slow to get going, Here had some sweet moments that some will find worthwhile. Those interested in quirky relationship flicks will find something to enjoy with Here.

Will makes maps. He meets Gadarine, a photographer. The pair quickly become one and take a journey together appreciating the world around them.

Here tries to be a very simple story though, at times, it is almost too simple. The vacancy of action is hard to bear when we're just talking about two people falling in love. With that said, the actors are able to create a tender relationship for Will and Gadarine, so on that account,  the love story is worth watching.

Although the film's pacing was slow, when it did get going, the moments shared on screen were enjoyable. Gadarine and Will visit some of her friends, and this interchange provides some needed humor. Furthermore, when Will and Gadarine interact with each other, their passion is evident, and that makes for a story worth watching.

At 120 minutes, I believe there is much to cut out. In a couple of places a narrator's dialogue overlaps bright, flashing colored posts, which adds absolutely nothing to the narrative. Instead, I would've liked to know more about Will and Gadarine as people and dynamic characters.

Here is love it or hate it. With its slow pace, there's a chance you'll dislike the film from the beginning, but it makes up for this with a romantic and endearing love story of two people searching for themselves and each other in this complicated world.
