The Birth of a Nation was all Sundance could talk about this year. Not only did it win both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, but it also set a new record when Fox Searchlight Pictures bought the worldwide rights to the tune of $17.5 million.
Slated to hit theaters in prime Academy Award fodder time, Fox Searchlight has finally released its first trailer for Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation.
The film stars Nate Parker as Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher in the Antebellum South whose financially strained owner Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer) accepts an offer for Nat to talk down unruly slaves with his sermons. As Nat leaves home and gets a first hand look at the atrocities endured by slaves, Nat orchestrates an uprising to free his people. In addition to playing Nat Turner, Parker is also the producer, director, and writer of the film.
