Sophie Turner is Lara Croft in Amazon’s “Tomb Raider” Series

After what feels like years without any updates, Sophia Turner is Laura Croft in the currently untitled Amazon series.  The project, created and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is now, after years in development, headed to production.

Turner, the long-rumored favorite to land the high-profile role previously played on the big screen by Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, entered negotiations last November.  Since then, things have been quiet on the project since announced back in 2023.  With speculation surrounding the project regarding creative differences and a reported two writers rooms, many had given up hope on the latest incarnation of the popular video game.

But alas, Paramount has set January 19 as the official start of production.

"I am so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team," Waller-Bridge said.  "It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving.  Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and all are as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is.  Get your artifacts out … Croft is coming …"

Tomb Raider is based on the 1996 video game that follows the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Laura Croft.  The game has been adapted into three feature-length films, the first debuting in 2001.  This will be the character's first live-action depiction on the small screen.

"I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Laura Croft," Turner stated.  "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I've got.  They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.  I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking."

The series, from Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM, doesn't yet have an official title or release date.

About Stephen Davis

I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
