While Hollywood continues to invest in reboots, sequels, and prequels of popular IP, Paramount+ is pulling the plug on its “Frasier” revival after two seasons. The CBS Studios series, which brought back Kelsey Grammar as the title character, is said to be shopped to other platforms in hopes of a season three renewal.
The revival co-starred Jack Cutmore-Scott, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Toks Olagundoye, Jess Salguiero, and Anders Keith. Peri Gilpin, the original Roz, joined the second season in a recurring guest star role.
The original series ran on NBC from 1993 to 2004. It co-starred David Hyde Pierce, John Mahoney, and Jane Reeves. Bebe Neuwirth starred in a recurring role as Frasier’s first wife, Lilith. That series won 37 Emmys, four of which went to Grammar for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
The revival, which premiered in October 2023, contains twenty episodes. It garnered three 2024 Emmy nominations and was helped a success by the streamer shortly after its debut. But Paramount+ was always an unusual home for the multi-camera comedy. Heavily invested in the world of Taylor Sheridan, the streamer has never warranted it a place for audiences to delve into sitcoms. For many, the writing has been on the wall.
While CBS Studios will shop the series to other platforms, with the inclusion of “Cheers,” Kelsey Grammar has starred as Dr. Frasier Crane in 484 episodes. That, undoubtedly, is an impressive legacy.
