For months now we’ve been hearing great things about La La Land, the upcoming musical film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. So far, the trailers have been moderately vague if not downright melancholy. Not so with the newest trailer. Here we get a glimpse of the joy that so many critics have praised it for.
Look, I’m a sucker for musicals, but I can’t be the only one that got a thrill when we get our first glimpse of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling dancing in time with music, right? As an unabashed fan of Singin’ in the Rain, La La Land looks like a beautifully shot homage to the 1952 Gene Kelly classic.
Sure, that’s based off a two-and-a-half-minute trailer and sure, the plot of young dreamers trying to make it in LA and falling in love is a story we’ve seen time and time again. But hey, 2016 could certainly use a little more happiness.
La La Land is the first film written and directed by Chazelle since 2014's Whiplash and it’s already garnering major Best Picture buzz. The public can judge for themselves when it goes into wide release on December 16, 2016.
