Having already received a wealth of publicity thanks to its very public rejection from the upcoming SXSW Film Festival, director Paul Shrader's The Canyons has gotten distribution from IFC Films. The studio plans to release the film in theaters in early summer 2013, day and date on digital platforms.
The Canyons stars Lindsay Lohan as the girlfriend of a wealthy Hollywood producer (played by porn star James Deen) and will follow their relationship as is desolves under dark and demanding sexual tension.
Even with the recent rejection from both Sundance and SXSW (SXSW was a bit more public about the matter), the film's represenitives were already fielding offers as a provocative tale with Lohan seemed to stir up enough interest, even without a festival premiere. The low budget film is said to have cost a measily $90,000, with $170,000 raised via Kickstarter and an additional $200,000 in actor deferments.
"I am delighted our film has found an enthusiastic home at IFC," Shrader said, in a statement. "We envisioned The Canyons as a multi-platform release from the beginning and no company knows that world better than IFC."
The film is set to have a special premiere screening at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and with IFC Films releasing, a Criterion Collection is a true possibility later this year.
