Ed Harris Joins “Yellowstone” Universe

The Yellowstone universe continues to get richer.

Four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris is returning to television to join the franchise in the upcoming spinoff series, The Dutton Ranch.  The series, a direct continuation of the mothership timeline, follows the lives of Beth and Rip.

Harris, Emmy-nominated for his work on HBO’s Westworld, will star alongside Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Finn Little, reprising their roles from the original series.  He will join previously announced Annette Bening, a five-time Oscar nominee herself.

The series, executive-produced by franchise creator Taylor Sheridan and showrunner Chad Feehan, will follow the lives of Beth and Rip as they work to manage the 7,000-acre property they fought so hard to retain, while raising their son.

Harris will play Everett McKinney, a “weathered veteran” and veterinarian who, from the sound of it, will provide a sense of compassion and humor to the otherwise intense situations.

Unlike other spinoffs, The Dutton Ranch will remain in the original Yellowstone timeline.  The family owns the largest cattle ranch in the United States.  After the explosive finale of the initial series, Beth and Rip have taken the helm.  Fans will get to see how they handle the trials and tribulations.

Harris reenters the genre after Appaloosa, a film he directed, co-wrote, and starred in.  The stars’ film credits include A Beautiful Mind, Pollaok, The Hours, The History of Violence, The Truman Show, and Apollo 13.  Additional television appearances include Empire Falls, and Game Change.

The Dutton Ranch is the third Yellowstone spinoff series announced, joining the Michelle Pfeiffer-led The Madison for Paramount+ and Y: Marshals with Luke Grimes returning to the franchise as Kayce Dutton.  The latter series will air on CBS.

About Stephen Davis

I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
