Sony is giving movie fans an early Christmas gift as they have just announced that the highly anticipated David Fincher film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will not hit theaters on December 20, 2012 - a day before its original release.
Granted Sony isn't beginning the screenings until 7:00pm on the night of the 20th - so it isn't really a full bent release. But the film is said to be almost two hours and forty minutes in length. So getting into a 7:00 pm showing will allow big fans to witness the film first without having to sit through an extremely late midnight showing.
Jeff Blake, who handles Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony PIctures said "This is one of the busiest times of the year for moviegoing and we can't wait to share this outstanding thriller with audiences all over the world. We feel that by opening for night-time shows on December 20th, fans of the book will be given the perfect opportunity to get a jump start on the release of an exceptional film."
Early word is fairly good for the David Fincher thriller based on the international best-seller by Stieg Larsson. With a plethora of films being released both on the 21st and Christmas Day, competition will be tough for the hard R-rated film. We shall see if this move improves its box-office intake, though in the long run I doubt it will make much of a difference.
