Last year, when Fox re-released Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace in the money hungry 3D format, it didn't run away from the competition as a full blown success. Still, fans and media insiders expected the next two 'episodes' to recieve the same treatment.
Sure enough, a few months after Episode One completed its theatrical run, Fox annouced that Episode Two and Episode Three would be re-released in 3D during September and October of 2013. Granted the dates have since changed, but plans have always remained that both films would take another run at theaters....until now.
With the announcement of Episode VII and the recent unveiling that J. J. Abrams would be sitting in the director's chair, Disney and LucasFilms has opted to postpone the re-releases and allow fan demand to build up for the upcoming original offering.
Via joint company released a statement via their website:
"Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 per cent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date."
They went on to say that the re-releases would happen, but as for a time, that is anyone's guess. Not gonna lie, the longer they stay away the better. None of the three were necessarily high points for the franchise.
Star Wars: Episode VII is due in theaters in 2015. Thus far, no casting has been done for the film.
