Based on the short story ""”All You Zombies"”" by Robert A. Heinlein, Predestination expands on the concept of paradoxes through time travel and follows one particular Agent (Hawke) who is trying to track down an elusive killer from his past.
This film is a joy to watch, as a big fan of sci-fi I really enjoyed the pacing of this film; the first half has an extensive bar scene between Sarah Snook and Ethan Hawke that reminded me of an extended scene Quentin Tarantino would do. The script is a true gem and the adapted screenplay by the Spierig brothers does the short story ""”All You Zombies"”" justice. They have a great ear for dialogue and really bring these characters to life. The acting in this film is spectacular; Ethan Hawke does a fine job as the lead agent, and Sarah Snook as Jane blew me away. She is so convincing as a tormented writer who seeks solace from Hawkes' character that I forgot I was watching a narrative feature film.
This film is an instant classic, and I can't wait to see what the Spierig Brothers do next! If you're a fan of mind bending time travel films like Inception, this is a film for you.
