This character piece
is centered around the idea of people finding each other and letting one
another go. Taryn (Campbell) finds out she's pregnant and seeks refuge with her
aunt and uncle (Taylor and Oldham), who are struggling through their own
divorce, as is their daughter, Abby (Gross). Each character has to learn how to
identify with the other as secrets are kept and slowly revealed to each other,
often in somewhat painful and abrupt ways.
I think one of the
best things about I Used to Be Darker is the music. With some original work
from Kim Taylor and Ned Oldham, the music adds an extra layer of emotion and
depth to the film that is necessary for this character piece to feel complete.
The photographic way in which the story is shot also makes the entire
production feel that much more intimate, as if the audience is intruding on the
family during a highly vulnerable time in their lives.
