Dig deep into your dresser and grab those pastel shirts and super short shorts. Universal’s upcoming Miami Vice, based on the popular 1980s TV series and directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, will hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
Dan Gilroy, who just won an Emmy for his work on the hit Disney+ series Andor, will write the script alongside two-time Oscar nominee Eric Singer (American Hustle, Top Gun: Maverick). Kosinski will produce with Dylan Clark.
Miami Vice was created by Anthony Yerkovich and ran for five seasons on NBC from 1984 to 1989. The series starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Sonny and Rico, police detectives who fought against the drug trade of Miami Beach.
Though the series had a massive impact on pop culture and fashion, it also left its mark on the small screen, introducing the world of Dick Wolf, who became showrunner during the show’s third season. Wolf opted to take the series in a more serious direction. Though the shift was poorly received by critics, its “ripped from the headline” approach would become the foundation of Wolf’s biggest success, Law & Order. That series is celebrating 35 years on the air this year.
The upcoming film adaptation joins a summer slate that is still filling out. If things remain intact, it will go head-to-head with Disney’s film adaptation of the hit children’s TV series Bluey. Universal also has a live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon slated for release in June. That said, fans can expect some shifting and additional announcements forthcoming.
