My first thought upon the credits rolling was this: Gratuitous shirtless (and sometimes only towel-clad) Chris Evans and many half-naked scenes with Anna Farris! I almost felt this tactic was used when my interest started to wane. At first, it was amusing. And then I realized what they did and didn't like it as much.
What's Your Number? follows Anna Farris' character through the trials of suddenly trying to find "the one" after flippantly strolling through the dating scene. The dialogue seems flat at times and Anna Farris isn't always terribly believable, but for the most part the film gets better as it goes along. Farris often came across as seeming surprised that she was in the film, and she has the tendency to overact a bit. It could just be her style, but it made the film less effective than it would have been otherwise.
The humor in What's Your Number? is mostly predictable. Chris Evans has some relatively witty lines and Joel McHale plays a surprisingly disturbing character quite well, which is fairly amusing. But there isn't one line that I'll always remember being from this film. It's funny; it's just not particularly memorable. Thankfully, much of the humor is in the footage not in the trailers, so there is a little something to be surprised at.
Some guys might enjoy this film; I think most would just tolerate it. What's Your Name is an almost perfect girls' night movie or a good compromise on date night. The storyline is pretty predictable and formulaic as a romantic comedy, but there is some humor and a few plot twists that I wouldn't have necessarily expected. Besides, if you find Chris Evans even remotely attractive, you'll have plenty of time to oogle.
