To absolutely no one's surprise, the Dutton family is sticking around for a bit longer as Paramount+ officially renews the hugely successful 1923.
The series, which serves as a prequel to Yellowstone, the franchise flagship, was created by mastermind Taylor Sheridan and broke many viewing records with its premiere in 2022. It follows the Dutton family's ancestors, led by Harrison Ford's Jacob, Helen Mirren's Cara, and Brandon Sklenar's Spencer Dutton.
Unlike 1883, the franchise's first prequel series that served as a limited engagement, this show's writers were always open to more storytelling. The presence of pandemics, unprecedented drought, and the end of Prohibition provide an array of conflicts that fans are eager to see unfold.
One of those fans is Ford himself.
"I had met with Taylor, who gave me a very brief outline of what he had in mind, and I went on faith and my experience with Yellowstone, 1883," Ford told The Hollywood Reporter prior to the show's premiere. "He's produced a work of incredible ambition, scale, scope [and] cinematic ambition. Taylor thinks of each of these episodes as a one-hour movie. And that's the product that we're getting."
As the Dutton universe continues to grow, bringing in high levels of talent like Ford and Mirren, there continues to be a unique, grounded approach to the characters. But with the offerings multiplying, fans must maintain a commitment to the story and its players. That said, we are far from reaching the complexity level of a Game of Thrones-style franchise.
Season 1 of 1923 returned on February 5. Yellowstone aired its midseason finale on New Year's Day. It will return this summer.
