During Saturday’s Comic-Con panel, showrunner Julie Plec announced that season 8 will be The Vampire Diaries’s last.
While certainly sad news for fans of the soapy CW hit, it doesn’t come as a surprise. Series star Nina Dobrev left the show after season 6 and many of the other original cast members have been dropping hints about leaving the show soon, including Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham.
Plec said, “The greatest honor you can have as a storyteller in the business of television is to be able to make those decisions with your peers and your fellow storytellers and we have all discussed it and we have made the decision that this is it.”
As far as storylines go, Plec was tightlipped about specifics but did mention that Dobrev has made clear that a return for Elena in the series finale is definitely plausible.
