It’s that time of year again, when on the bubble shows get axed or saved. Today it seemed like death knocked at the door of many writers’ rooms as ABC, CBS, and FOX all made announcements about their upcoming season.
ABC took out Castle, probably for the best as the next season wouldn’t have included series regular Stana Katic. They also axed the low-rated Agent Carter, which is a shame if only because Hayley Atwell is so incredible on that show. Galavant wasn’t able to meta-sing its way to a third season (the first episode of the second season was titled “A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear”). Also not able to sing (or tour) itself to another season was Nashville. The world mourns the loss of Connie Britton’s beautiful hair on our television sets each week. And the network again decided not to pursue the Marvels’ Agents of SHIELD spin-off Marvel’s Most Wanted. Hopefully SHIELD can find a way to weave fan-favorites Bobbi Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) back into the show as regulars in the wake of their failed pilot.
Over in FOX land, execs decided to ditch Rob Lowe’s The Grinder and John Stamos’s Grandfathered. The cancellation of The Grinder in particular seemed to have Twitter in an uproar. Aptly named Second Chance also got axed, in ways an amusing summary of the television landscape right now.
Over on CBS, the network cancelled CSI: Cyber, marking the first time in 16 years that the network hasn’t had a CSI show. CBS also dropped Supergirl, but the superhero series moves to The CW, where other successful DC Universe, Greg-Berlanti-helmed shows Arrow and The Flash currently reside. It remains to be seen how Supergirl will juggle a reduced budget and swapping locations from Los Angeles to Vancouver.
So pour one out for those superheroes, starlets, and aging hunks that lost their jobs today. May they bounce back quickly! And hey, there’s always another pilot season just around the corner.
