Raise your hand if you miss Wreck-it-Ralph. Okay, I can’t actually see you, but, if you are among the millions who couldn’t get enough of the bad-guy-turned-good in 2012, then you’re probably making a fool of yourself at the office right now. Okay, put your hand down. People are staring.
On March 9, 2018, Ralph returns alongside the girl with the game-winning glitch, Vanellope von Schweetz, to cause mayhem on a brand new terrain: the Internet. It’s a change in scenery that writer Phil Johnston (Zootopia) is especially excited about.
“The world of the Internet is the perfect place to send Ralph and Vanellope,” Johnston says. “The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless.”
While Johnston and director Rich Moore are tight-lipped about specific plot details, they confirm that several familiar faces will return alongside lead voice actors John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman. For his part, Reilly is happy to finally have an answer for all those kids asking when his beloved Ralph will return.
“Making the first Wreck-it-Ralph was one of the most special experiences I’ve ever had and I’m really looking forward to bringing him back to life,” he says. “So many kids I’ve met all over the world are excited to see him again, too. They tell me all the time!”
This will undoubtedly be music to Disney’s ears, as they rode a wave of cash to the Academy Awards after the first film. And while we may have to wait a couple years to see Ralph back on the big screen (the untitled sequel is slated for a March 9, 2018 release), we can catch him on the small screen in the meantime.
In true Ralph fashion, the video game star will be surprising players of Disney’s Crossy Road by showing up and wrecking their gameplay. Even as he moves on to the Internet, Ralph remains fixed in his old ways—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
