Downton Abbey may theoretically take place in the early 1900s, but its reach feels much more endless. The wildly popular television show has successfully pivoted to the big screen, bringing the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs servants to movie theaters worldwide through two major motion pictures.
Have no fear Downton-fiends, Robert, Cora, and their ever-growing family are set to return to our screens in September 2025. Currently in production in the UK, plot details have yet to emerge. We do know that the film will be written by creator Julian Fellowes, produced by Gareth Neale, Fellowes, and Liz Trubridge, and directed by Simon Curtis, the director of 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era.
The film will see the return of cast mainstays, both from the Crawley family and their downstairs staff. Big screens mean big guest stars, with Paul Giamatti set to feature among others.
September 12, 2025 feels about as far away as the early 1900s, but hopefully we can all channel our inner Mary Crawley and keep a stiff upper lip about the wait.
