Man, the man is non-stop. Just when you thought Lin-Manuel Miranda might be slowing down, Disney has announced that Miranda and songwriter Alan Menken will team up for the long-rumored live action feature adaptation of the Disney animated classic The Little Mermaid.
Miranda will also produce the film alongside Marc Platt. In addition to the featured tunes from the 1989 animated classic, the live action version will also contain new songs penned by Miranda and Menken. This new collaboration furthers Disney’s relationship with the Broadway star, who also worked on the music for the upcoming Disney animated feature Moana and is set to co-star in the live action sequel to Mary Poppins with Emily Blunt in the titular role.
After the success of Disney’s live-action Cinderella, Disney has quickly greenlit more live-action remakes including the recently released The Jungle Book and the forthcoming Beauty and the Beast (set for a March 2017 release). Also in the pipeline are Cruella (with Emma Stone as the dognapper from 101 Dalmations), Dumbo (directed by Tim Burton), Jungle Cruise, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Disney is also rumored to be working on a live-action adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Ava DuVernay.
While actually seeing this new The Little Mermaid is still years away, it’s always comforting to know that talented die-hard Disney fans like Miranda and established Disney great Menken are up to the task.
