Principal photography has just begun on Battle of the Sexes, which chronicles the famous 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, creators of Little Miss Sunshine and Ruby Sparks, the film covers the most watched televised sports event of all time. Billed as the “Battle of the Sexes”, the match became a historical touch point for gender equality and the feminist movement.
Fox Searchlight Pictures has released our first look at Stone and Carell in costume as King and Riggs, at the moment the tennis match is announced at an official press conference in July 1973.
Battle of the Sexes is expected to hit theaters in 2017.
