“Gods of Egypt” Gets Home Video Release Date

The ultimate struggle between good and evil arrives when Lionsgate’s Gods of Egypt is released on Digital HD on May 17th. The film’s Blu-Ray/DVD release will follow two weeks later on May 31st.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Gerald Butler (300) star as rival Egyptian gods Set and Horus, who do battle for the ultimate prize – the Universe. But in order for Horus to defeat Set he must unite with a mortal on a journey that spans across all of Egypt, the heavens and the afterlife.

The “doomed before it was even released” film grossed a disappointing $30 million at the domestic box office. Fortunately it made up some ground internationally where it passed the $100 million mark. Regardless, the release never met audience expectations, falling well short of 2010’s Clash of the Titans and 2012’s Wrath of the Titans.

While many critics panned the film Gods of Egypt had an uphill battle from the onset as the casting controversy overshadowed anything pertaining to the actual film. Granted poor CGI didn’t help matters, but it was no surprise that the highly publicized film failed to make back its $140 million budget.

But there is always a chance at a second life on home video. The Blu-Ray/Digital HD release comes with a slew of special features, including deleted storyboards, and six featurettes, including “Of Gods and Mortals: The Cast” and a look at the impressive stunts from the film in “The Battle for Eternity: Stunts”.
