Get out those umbrellas and start practicing your rendition of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” – Mary Poppins is returning to theaters on Christmas Day 2018.
Directed and produced by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) and starring Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) as Mary Poppins, the film is set as a sequel to the 1964 Disney film. The story will take place in Depression-era London and will feature a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. With the help of her friend Jack, a street lamplighter, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the breakout star/director/writer of Broadway’s wildly successful Hamilton, will play newcomer Jack and the screenplay will be written by David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers.
Originally played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 film, it will be interesting to see Blunt’s take on such an iconic character. The same can be said for Miranda, who will be playing a new character but is basically a surrogate for Dick Van Dyke’s chimney sweep Bert.
