The Reluctant Fundamentalist

score:
C
Director:
Mira Nair
Cast:
Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland
Running Time:
128
Rated:
R
Author(s):

Taking a unique (and somewhat daring) approach to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist made leaps and bounds to be different, original, and controversial.  An all-star cast and a stellar script should have made for a home run, but somehow the film ventured off course, diving too deeply into the details and forgetting that sometimes, especially in the world of film, less is more.

Oblivion

Joseph Kosinski

Oconomowoc

score:
D-
Director:
Andy Gillies
Cast:
Brendan Marshall-Rashid, Andy Gillies, Cindy Pinzon
Running Time:
79
Rated:
NR
Author(s):

Oconomowoc, the feature writing/directing/producing debut of Andy Gillies, is an amateur success story that will, however, leave viewers confused and frustrated. The “plot” is loosely as follows: angsty doucher Lonnie Washington (Brendan Marshall-Rashid) rejects a job opportunity (“it wasn’t in his best interest”—whatever that means) to move back into his parents’ house, run by his boozy matriarch mother, and find some direction. His friend Travis (Andy Gillie) convinces him to join his fledgling t-shirt business, and they reluctantly meander through the rest of the film..

G.I. Joe: Retaliation 3D

score:
C
Director:
Jon M. Chu
Cast:
Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, RZA, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee
Running Time:
110
Rated:
PG-13
Author(s):

If you recall, G.I. Joe: Retaliation was originally supposed to come out sometime during 2012 and was delayed due to the last minute 3-D conversion. If that was really the reason, then God help me, but Paramount really should have just gone with whatever it was and pushed it out last year. The 3-D is not worth it. I realize that I'm not a fan of it to begin with, but the way it was used here didn't add anything to Retaliation

Hawking

C
Director:
Stephen Finnigan
Cast:
Stephen Hawking, Nathan Chapple, Arthur Pelling, Martin King, Joe Lovell
Running Time:
86
Rated:
NR
Author(s):

While there is no doubt that Stephen Hawking is an interesting and smart guy, Hawking is the epitome of an "alright" movie. I am really hard pressed to call this movie a documentary but more of a biographic that simply touches on someone's life.

I think we can all remember when we first got onto Napster or maybe even one of its spin-offs like LimeWire; I do, and the excitement of having unbelievable access to free music changed my life and my perception of music forever. Downloaded is a well done documentary about the guys that made it all possible and changed the music industry forever.

Fuck for Forrest

score:
F
Director:
Michal Marczak
Cast:
Tommy Hol Ellingsen, Leona Johansson, Kaajal
Running Time:
86
Rated:
NR
Author(s):

Bizarre and unorthodox, Berlin's Fuck for Forest is one of the world's most peculiar charities.  Based on the mere idea that sex can save the world, this NGO raises money for their environmental cause by selling home-made erotic films on the internet.  Michal Marczak's documentary shows the group in their natural habitat, showcasing them to the world as they work to save enough money to buy a piece of forest and save the indigenous people from the horrid impact of the West.
