On the surface, Mud, written and directed by Jeff Nichols, is a chase movie. Two young boys, Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), live on a river in Arkansas. Their life together is like something out of a suburban upper class mother’s nightmare—they sneak out in the wee hours of the morning and dirtbike (no helmets!) to a hidden bank upriver, where they ride a cheap motorboat (no life jackets!) to an unoccupied island to explore, dodging poisonous snakes (snakes!).

Austin has always been considered a movie hot spot. From Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino to Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey, there are few out in Hollywood that aren't familiar with Austin or its surrounding communities. But still, when a movie is shot in the quickly growing Texas capitol, people get excited. Last night, amid the scorching sun that brought the Texas heat to a whopping 104 degrees, Austinites lined the theater wall as those who appeared in Summit Entertainment's upcoming release, Bandslam, took to the red-carpet.

Over the last several years, Austin native Matthew McConaughey has established himself as a credible source for romantic laughs. Killer good looks, a free-spirited personality and his southern charm attract moviegoers right and left - well the female ones anyway. However, to be kind, most of the films in question could be categorized as decent at best features with cheesy and over-the-top premises that are highly unlikely in real life.
