There is an undeniable draw that music has for humans and an undeniable dynamic that exists within a family. No matter what style of music you listen to or family background you come from, these subjects stir the soul. For this film, the progression of how and why that is becomes the route the filmmakers choose to explore. Unfortunately, the story you see is the same song you’ve heard many times before.

The Internship

Director:
Shawn Levy
Cast:
Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Rose Byrne, Dylan O’Brien, Max Minghella
Running Time:

Rated:

The last time we saw Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn headlining a movie together, they were crashing weddings. Now, in pursuit of an internship, they decide to crash a multibillion dollar internet company after losing their sales job. The Internship is not a sequel to Wedding Crashers. Trust me. I Google searched it to make sure.

Clive Owen, Andreas Riseborough, Gillian Anderson, Aidan Gillen, Domhnall Gleeson
Running Time:
101
Rated:

Shadow Dancer is one of those movies that is marketed as a thriller but is less than thrilling. The plot is actually very interesting, but the filmmaker’s execution of the story is not what I expected.  Shadow Dancer is about an active member of the IRA, the Irish Republican Army, named Collette during the rebellion in 1993. After being caught by authorities attempting an act of terrorism in London, she is recruited as an informant for the MI5 in exchange for the safety of herself and her young son.

Director:
Pauline Chan
Cast:
Guy Pearce, Zhu Lin, Claudia Karvan, Elaine Jin, Lincoln Lewis
Running Time:
97
Rated:
NR

33 Postcards is the type of movie that is best suited for a lazy Sunday afternoon when you’re flipping through the channels and there is nothing else on. The storyline is captivating enough to keep you occupied for an hour and a half but not so much so that you have to focus all of your energy to figure out a very intricate plot. 33 Postcards is pretty much all fluff.

The Angels' Share

score:

Director:
Ken Loach
Cast:
Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, Gary Maitland, Jasmin Riggins, William Ruane, Roger Allam
Running Time:
101
Rated:
NR
Author(s):

Even at age 76, veteran director Ken Loach has been able to stay in touch with his youth. In films such as Sweet Sixteen (2002) and the seminal Kes (1969), he tells highly relatable stories about young men on the brink, searching for meaning in a society that seems to have no use for them. Though The Angels’ Share features a similarly hopeless protagonist, it features a much brighter ending for him.

Arthur Newman

score:

Director:
Dante Ariola
Cast:
Colin Firth, Emily Blunt, Anne Heche
Running Time:
101
Rated:
R
Author(s):

Arthur Newman, much like the eponymous character who shifts identities willy-nilly, does not know what film to be. At times, I was sure that it would be some sort of devil- may-care film where the leads would spend the entire time gallivanting around assuming different identities. Instead, Arthur Newman spends its time moping around and telling us the characters are complete failures as human beings with only flashes of humanity. Firth’s Arthur J.
