The New Age of Summer Television

Summer used to be a time when major networks laid to rest some of their most needless shows.  But over the last decade cable channels have presented a new style of television programming; one that takes advantage of the hot summer months and gives audiences what they want most: big stars, edgy stories and less time commitment for actors and viewers alike.

Interview: Emma Stone: Easy A

Ever since debuting her talents in the highly praised Superbad Emma Stone has been a hot commodity. She has gone on to star in such hits as Rocker, The House Bunny andZombineland, three outstanding films featuring three all-star casts. But Stone has never landed the leading role….until now.

Ever since she was six, Drew Barrymore has been working on the big screen, playing some of the most iconic roles in some of cinema's most memorable films. Now, decades later, the famed child star is proving her talent, stepping behind the camera to direct her first major motion picture, Fox Searchlight's Whip It.

Star Trek

score:
A
Director:
J.J. Abrams
Cast:
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Karl Urban
Running Time:
126
Rated:
PG-13
Author(s):
Complete with amazing special effects, a strong, character-centered story and an unbelievable all-star cast, J.J. Abrams' official 'reboot' of the long dead tar Trek franchise is not only good, but hellishly cool, hip and addicting. And though it is beginning to suffer the effects of over-hype, I can't retract from the excitement and mystifying feeling that I had as I slowly, against my will, was forced from my theater seat.

Death Race

score:
B
Director:
Paul W.S. Anderson
Cast:
Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Tyrese Gibson, Ian McShane, Natalie Martinex
Running Time:
89
Rated:
R
To say that Jason Statham is a bonafied action star would be a huge overstatement. Sure the man has produced hits with Transporter, Italian Job and Bank Job, but the bulked actor has also produced some major garbage in Transporter 2, Crank and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale. Thankfully, this film is not the sequel to either Transporter 2 or Crank – both of which can be expected within the next twelve months.

Wall-E

score:
A
Director:
Andrew Stanton
Cast:
Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, Fred Willard
Running Time:

Over the last several years, Walt Disney/Pixar has given audiences a clean run of stellar films. From 1995's Toy Story and 2001's Monsters Inc. to 2003's Finding Nemo and 2004's The Incredibles, their films have entertained and enlightened audiences of all ages. And with one major release every year for the last five years, you would think that the studio without a flop would run out of luck and ideas. However, 2008 isn't that year.

Atonement

Over the last few years, stars of NBC's popular sitcom, 'The Office,' have had a difficult time making the transition to film. From Steve Carell's leading role in last summer's major flop, Evan Almighty, to John Krasinski's role in Leatherheads, the box-office has not been kind to the employees at Dunder-Mifflin. But now, after the success of this summer's Get Smart, Rainn Wilson is hoping to turn things around with his new comedy, The Rocker.
