In an act of on-screen life imitating one-time real life, Justin Long and Drew Barrymore step outside their comfort zones (wink) to portray on-screen lovers in Nanette Burstein’s long-distance relationship comedy Going the Distance. Considering their on-again, off-again relationship status in real life, I guess it wasn’t too much of a stretch; however, based on their lack of on-screen chemistry, I’d say that neither would be willing to join forces again. Simply put, this film was painful to watch.

Serious Moonlight

Director:
Cheryl Hines
Cast:
Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell, Justin Long
Running Time:

Rated:

Scripted by the late Adrienne Shelly, Serious Moonlight is much more than a film. Starring Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton, the feature rebirths the charismatic soft-tone comedy that Shell\y was so good at capturing. Her untimely death shortly before the release of Waitress placed a large question mark on this project, and though it is far from perfect, I am still pleased with its natural fruition.

Planet 51

score:

Director:
Jorge Blanco
Cast:
Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Seann William Scott
Running Time:
91
Rated:
PG
Author(s):
In a world where Pixar reigns supreme, other 'wannabe' studios rarely merit a mention in terms of their universal appeal in animation. Sony penetrated the market a bit earlier in the year with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and while they looked to have the receipt for success with Planet 51, after watching the film, I sit here in amazement at the fact that it was ever even made.

Drag Me to Hell

score:

Director:
Sam Raimi
Cast:
Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Loma Raver, David Paymer
Running Time:
99
Rated:
PG-13
Author(s):
Over the lat five years, a noticeable change has developed within the world of scary movies. Gone are the days of Freddy and Jason, replaced by spirits and haunting images that interfere with the minds and actions of our heroines. The once expected hard-R ratings have been replaced by the softer, more receptive PG-13 classification. And while the change has resulted in a boost in terms of box-office revenue, those who live and breathe for the genre are quietly seeing their obsession loose strength.
